Welcoming the New Curate!

Yvonne has come from Christ Church Pellon where she has been worshipping for many years.  She has been training for ordination for three years.  As well as working part time in the parish of Mixenden and Illingworth she will continue to work for Calderdale Council in her role as recycling…

We Are the Diocese of Leeds

Since the formation of the diocese of Leeds over two years ago, there has been a lot of work going on to bring three organisations together.  However, there is a lot of hard work that has been done in the meantime “on the ground”.  The diocese have just released this video giving a brief snapshot of some of the good work and diversity that is being done here in West Yorkshire!

The Floods – From Bishop Jonathan

From Bishop Jonathan “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”The storms over the Christmas period have had a devastating effect on communities in the Calder Valley. The floods have affected many homes, businesses and community facilities, including schools, and the effects will last much longer than the attention of the news media. At the same time, the response to the floods locally and from further afield has been remarkable, with people working tirelessly to…

Why is the Church of England getting involved with …?

Time and time again people ask me the question, “Why is the Church of England getting involved with…?” At which point you can add the words refugees, debt, tax credits, or any number of other things. Surely the primary business of the Church is religion, helping people to develop a relationship with God and to become part of the life of the Church. So why get involved in all these other issues? Well, we need to remember that the central…

Women Bishops!

Today is an historic day for the Church of England as it passed legislation for women bishops 18 months after the last vote failed.  Whilst there are female Anglican bishops in the world wide church this is a significant vote because it now means that all forms of ministry are open to both sexes here in England.  The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby said: Today is the completion of what was begun over 20 years with the ordination of women…

Pentecost

A morning of fun and excitement was had at Holy Nativity on Sunday 6th of June as the community came together to celebrate the feast of Pentecost. A fantastic morning was shared with friends from 30th Holy Nativity Scout Troup as fun songs were sung and prayers were offered together. We began by flinging red and yellow poster paint around to make salad spinner flame prayers on paper plates. We also made prayer flags to offer the people we loved…

Forming a New Diocese

“May you live in interesting times” is an old phrase that is often attributed as a Chinese proverb. Here at Holy Nativity we are certainly moving into ‘interesting times’ as part of The Diocese of Wakefield. On Monday 8th of July the national governing body of the Church of England voted to go ahead with a scheme whereby our diocese will be dissolved along with Ripon and Leeds Diocese and Bradford Diocese. In its place a new larger diocese of…

Party in the Precinct – #Wakefield125

On Sunday, Holy Nativity climbed aboard a minibus and invaded Wakefield Diocese’s Party in the Precinct” at Wakefield Cathedral.  It is 125 years since the Diocese of Wakefield was created to serve the needs of West Yorkshire and with a newly refurbished Cathedral it was time to PARTY!! And what a party it was!  The Bishop of Wakefield, Right Reverend Stephen Platten opened proceedings with a giant cake.  As the old school jazz band led hundreds of people in singing…

Celebrating 25 Years in Partnership with Tanzania

In April there was a big celebration at Wakefield cathedral in to celebrate 25 years of the diocesan link with Tanzania.  The service was well attended and Bishop Hilkiah preached an inspiring sermon.  He told the congregation how much the link meant to the people in Tanzania and how much progress is being made with the projects that we continue to support. The water for life project has done some excellent work ensuring clean water for lots of people. The…
